Hey guys!

Because of everything that was going on during the end of class I just want to make sure that we all agreed that we were going to meet before class next Tuesday (we were thinking like 4ish? 4:30?)

So I guess we should all look at the lesson to see what needs to be cut and what needs to be kept in order to complete it in the 10 minute time frame.

4 works for me on Tuesday. I think we should try to meet as close to 4 as possible just to ensure us more time. Where are we meeting?

4pm on Tuesday the 20th works for me. We can just meet in the lobby of Stayer downstairs and then find a place to go to meet? We should probably start discussing what parts of the lesson plan we want to keep. Should we all just look for one component of it? I'm not sure how to go about narrowing it down... but we should probably make a deadline for this week to have our decisions of what will stay and what will go.

Lets try to have everyone post what parts of the lesson are the most important to discuss by Sunday night, like 9pm? So then on Monday we can discuss everything we want to say by posting on here, that way on Tuesday when we meet we can just practice our presentation. How does that sound?

Hey all:
I think that we should all make up the examples for each country. Like someone plot for Mexico, U.S. and China. That way we can show on the projector. I can do United States Pyramid graph.
Can other people do Mexico, China, India, France, Nigeria? I just think this would be cool to show off all the finished products. Since the class won't be able to actually do the lesson with us.

So after reviewing this lesson plan there doesn't seem to be a lot to "cut out"; it is only really the one activity and then the follow-up activity. So I'm guessing that all we can do is the first activity? There doesn't seem to be a way to shorten that too much..

I agree there doesn't seem to be that much extra stuff we need to do for this lesson plan. If we just do the activity it should be good.

that's what I was saying - if we all do the activity for each country and that way we have an example for each - we should be good. Again I did the U.S. plot graph.

I thought the presentation was only supposed to be 3 minutes long? i think if we just do one pyramid with the class that would be good. like if we did one on the overhead and then everyone had their own copy so they could follow along with us. we could start out by explaining what demographers are and what they do and explain how to do the pyramid. then we can end with doing a few discussion questions.

That sounds like a good idea. I think we only get like 5 minutes so short and to the point works for me.

We can split it up into parts like someone can introduce what we are going to do, someone can explain what demographers are and what they do, someone can do/explain the pyramid, someone can lead the discussion and someone can like explain how this is a good lesson for students and what the students should learn. I think we should also think of a performance task that can be done at the end of the lesson like maybe allowing the students to pick a country then research the population (gender and age) and do a pyramid on their own. Sorry if sounds confusing lol. I'm willing to introduce/explain the lesson or I can explain the part about the demographers.

That works for me as well. I was just wondering we are all meeting at 4:00 before class - where did we all want to meet and talk about the lesson since we have to meet in the MPR room??

I can also do 4:00 PM tomorrow before class. Why don't we all just meet in the Stayer 1st floor lobby and then pick a place to meet from there (like an open classroom). Then we can just go to the MPR for the guest speaker. I assume we are going with the model of only presenting one pyramid to the class and showing them how to do it. I will explain why population lessons and doing these population pyramids is a good lesson/learning experience for the students. I will also try and come up with some good discussion questions before our meeting tomorrow.

Justin, there are discussion questions on the CD that Dr. Scott gave us. you can just pick which questions you want to ask :)
This is what I plan on saying- introduction, explaining the objectives, and the materials needed.
